A Crypto Book
for Grown-Ups.

A short, no-bullshit, plain-English framework for crypto. Written for adults.

This is not another incomprehensible whitepaper or YouTube tutorial.

It's a clear, to-the-point primer for people who've been around for a while and just need the facts.

You've seen a lot of technological changes in the last few decades. Personal computers, the internet, mobile phones, smartphones. Now AI and crypto. It's not easy to keep up. But you've adapted to all the others, and this one's no different... once someone strips out the noise.

That's what this book does, and it was written by someone who lived through all of the other changes, and knows the difference between hype and a real shift.

By the end of this book you'll have:

  • A defensible framework for whether crypto belongs in your portfolio, and why
  • The 5 mistakes that catch smart professionals in their first month in crypto, and how to sidestep every one
  • A 20-minute security setup that prevents 99% of the horror stories you read about
  • A way to evaluate any cryptocurrency in 5 minutes flat, without a degree in Computer Science or Finance
  • A model for sizing your crypto allocation. It depends on exactly two things.

Twelve things you'll know by Sunday night.

Here is a small taste of what you'll learn from The Grown-Up's Guide to Crypto. Any one of them is worth far more than the price of the book.

p.29

A clear, repeatable process to evaluate any crypto in under 5 minutes... without getting a Computer Science degree.

p.50

The 5 expensive mistakes smart professionals walk straight into during their first month of crypto.

p.38

A 20-minute, one-time setup that quietly prevents 99% of the crypto horror stories you've read about (no special hardware, no security paranoia, no doomsday prep).

p.21

The most-quoted Bitcoin fact... and the one Bitcoiners themselves quietly admit matters far more.

p.11

The three letters that tell you why this cycle is structurally different from all previous ones (and what it means for your portfolio).

p.38

The one input you must never type into your phone, not even once, not even at home, and especially not the time someone tells you it's for 'safekeeping'.

p.35

The two paragraphs that will end the 'crypto's bad for the environment' argument at your next dinner (and probably explain why your accountant's been quoting a number from 2021).

p.51

If you've ever opened a Coinbase account and closed the tab inside thirty seconds, this is the specific mistake you almost made (and the small adjustment that changes the entire experience now).

p.51

The five-word question that would have saved more than $30,000 of avoidable mistakes.

p.20

The plain-English version of 'blockchain' (without the technology, the buzzwords, or the salesperson's bluff).

p.42

The quickest path from 'I should probably get some' to 'I actually own some' (without ending up holding a coin you can't explain to your spouse, your accountant, or yourself).

p.46

The two crucial factors that dictate how much crypto should sit in your portfolio (the financial press only ever talks about one).

02 Who It's For

Who this book is really for.

I'm a child of the '80s.

I grew up with the Cold War, taping songs off the radio and using a phone with a cord.

Since then I've built a career. I've raised kids (or at least kept them alive until now). I've spent years watching most of my salary disappear every month into a seemingly bottomless bucket labeled "mortgage repayments". I've lived through the dotcom bubble, the GFC and the brief window when everyone thought Beanie Babies were a retirement strategy.

So when a 22yo with laser eyes tells me to "have fun staying poor", my bullshit detector goes into overdrive.

But something real is happening here. I know it. You know it too... or you wouldn't have read this far down the page.

So the question is:

Are you going to do something about it?

Or are you going to turn up to Christmas dinner and listen to your niece explain Layer 1s, while nodding politely because you don't have the first clue what she's on about... again?

Are you going to open up Coinbase, look at the interface for a few moments, shake your head, and close the tab... again?

Because that's the real cost.

Inaction. Sitting on the sidelines while others grab the opportunity with both hands.

Not nine dollars for a book.

And that cost will continue to compound while crypto moves from niche to systemic in real time. While ETF inflows blow past $50B. While sovereign wealth funds, corporate treasuries and institutions continue to accumulate.

The people who understood crypto in 2017 were the ones who started paying attention in 2013. The ones who'll understand it in 2030 are getting started right now.

In the end, it all boils down to this.

If you buy the book, read it and decide it wasn't for you... that's two hours and nine dollars you could have spent otherwise. A poor movie choice will cost you more than that.

But if you don't buy it, you could end up out of the market for who knows how long, while the window continues to close.

Nine dollars. Less than what you'll spend on your next coffee catch-up with your brother-in-law... where you know he'll ask you yet again what you think about Bitcoin.

03 Author

Tony Barrett: started from zero at age 47.

Tony Barrett, author

My crypto journey goes back to 2013, when I read the Bitcoin whitepaper on a flight from Melbourne to Sydney. I decided right then and there to pick up a few of these "digital bitcoins". Just in case.

But by the time the flight landed there was some urgent "crisis" to deal with in my business (I can't even remember what it was, so it must've been important) and the Bitcoin experiment was relegated to a dusty shelf somewhere in the back of my mind.

It took me 8 years to come back to it.

When I finally sat down to figure it out in 2021, I discovered that Bitcoin had gone from ~$100 to ~$20,000 per coin. D'oh. Then over the following couple of years I burned more than $30,000 on a grab-bag of shit that I couldn't have explained at gunpoint. Every cent of it avoidable. Every cent of it instructive.

Eventually I got tired of donating my hard-earned money and started building a proper, robust personal framework for crypto investment. A framework for grown-ups. That framework is what's in this book, and every principle, every element, every decision is based on my first-hand experience over the last five years.

Final Word

One window is closing. It doesn't have a countdown timer.

There's no fake scarcity on this page. The book is nine dollars. It'll still be nine dollars next week. (Probably.)

The window that matters isn't on this checkout page. It's the one outside it.

The evolution from niche to systemic means more and more of us will end up owning crypto over the next few years, one way or another. Through a super fund, an ETF, or a payment app, often without ever deciding to.

The only question left is whether you'll own it with a clear, effective framework... or the way you watched a colleague buy his first investment property in 2003: expensively and without quite knowing why.

Nine dollars is the cost of owning it the first way.
